Andrea Bauer, MD

Andrea Bauer, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon in the Orthopedic Center at Boston Children’s Hospital and an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. She specializes in pediatric hand and upper limb surgery, working with newborns through college-age children to treat conditions from nerve injuries to congenital hand differences. Her research centers around early diagnosis of nerve injuries associated with brachial plexus birth injury. Her goal is to find earlier treatments to improve outcomes. Her currently funded research includes the NAPTIME study, a new technique for early MRI to determine prognosis in infants with brachial plexus birth injury.

Dr. Bauer came to Boston Children’s from Shriners Hospital for Children – Northern California and UC Davis Medical School, where she directed the brachial plexus birth injury program and built a research plan to improve the care of children with brachial plexus birth injuries. She attended Princeton University, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and completed her residency at Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program before enrolling in fellowships in both adult hand surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and pediatric hand surgery at Shriners Hospital for Children — Northern California. Dr. Bauer’s interest in pediatric orthopedics, however, dates back to an orthopedic surgery of her leg during her own childhood. That experience provided a conduit for understanding the way that people function. It drove her desire to give others the opportunity to also experience a normal childhood and go on to achieve anything they put their mind to.

Dr. Bauer is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, with a subspecialty certification in Surgery of the Hand. She has more than 30 original research publications and has presented her work nationally and internationally. Most recently she has served as editor of the new textbook, Upper Extremity Injuries in Young Athletes, along with her colleague, Donald Bae, MD.
